Ahh coffee. There’s plenty of research proving it healthy, but every now and again you sure do need a break from it. Usually it’s right about the moment you start to feel totally over-exhausted and increase your daily cups from 1 to 2 to 4 to OOPS.
Whenever we feel like we’ve really gone too far down the caffeine abuse spiral, we usually take the 10-day challenge – that’s no coffee for 10 days, as a little reset. But let’s be honest, it’s a hard habit to kick when it’s freezing cold outside, even for such a short period of time! So what’s a girl to do?
Check out our 10 go-to coffee substitutes, which come with a BIG celebrity tick of approval too. A few even contain (just a little) caffeine in case you’re not ready to commit all the way. You’re welcome!

If you really can’t give up your morning buzz and want to feel a whole lot better about it, this is coffee but not really. Each serve has significantly less caffeine than your average cup but is packed with superfoods, herbs and other good stuff that work to give you the same kind of energy boost, without the crash. Individual serve sachets make sure you don’t overdo the dose and you can take them anywhere, with no mess. Flavours like green coffee, African mango, raspberry ketone and berry boost will kick your day into gear, and the completely caffeine free hot cacao superblend and detox teas will bring it home.

Matcha powder will give you a bigger kick than any other green tea, and it’s incredibly good for you too! You can make it straight up, but we love it made up as an almond latte. Just warm ¾ of a cup almond milk gently, then add 1 teaspoon of matcha powder and top up the cup with boiling water, stirring briskly or whisking gently as you do. Add a little cinnamon or stevia to add sweetness.

This is much more delicious than it sounds and has the added benefit of kicking sugar cravings to the curb and aiding digestion after dinner. Go for straight up licorice, or try Pukka’s peppermint & licorice blend

This sounds weird, but a toasty warm protein shake is actually super delicious and on a cold day, can make the perfect 3pm pick-me-up food! Add 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder (we love Passion Projects vegan protein for a lighter option, or Promise Nutrition for a creamier whey based option), to hot water or warm coconut milk. Add a little vanilla extract, or sprinkle cinnamon on top to taste. So yum. So satisfying.

Ginseng tea is known as a caffeine-free stress buster. It’s soothing and relaxing your body and mind, while giving you a little mood boost at the same time. The tea itself is quite bitter, so add a touch of honey or liquid stevia if you need to and drink up!
Celeb fan: Kim Kardashian
There’s a little caffeine in traditional chai tea, but nowhere near as much as in your regular coffee. It’s still milky and satisfying and the spices it contains make it feel like a sweet treat too. The nicest slow Sunday tea, we love the wet mix from Sticky Chai

If you’ve never tried hot carob, put it on your ‘yes please’ list. The powder not only tastes great made into a hot drink, it also turns your tastebuds off sugar, so that’s a big win in our books! Add 1 teaspoon to a mug of boiling water, with a dash of organic cream and a little liquid stevia, or include a teaspoon of cacao for a chocolaty kick.
Celeb fan: Gwyneth Paltrow
This sounds boring but when you’re drinking it on a cold winter’s morning, it’s just perfect. Squeeze a few wedges of lemon into hot tap water in a big mug or glass and drink up! Warm lemony water will stimulate your metabolism in the morning, or rev it up before a big meal. And it will perk you up, no caffeine required.
Celeb fan: Kylie Jenner for detoxing
This will make you feel like you’ve woken up in Morocco! Just take a handful of fresh mint leaves, gently tap them to release the flavor and then pop them in a mug of boiling water. Leave to brew for a few minutes, then drink up.
Celeb fan: Jennifer Lawrence uses it to de-bloat
It’s black like coffee, it’s bitter like coffee, it’s strong like coffee, but it’s super detoxing, great for your liver, reduces water retention and can help digestion. Hand it over with a dash of organic milk and a little stevia leaf, please and thank you!
