Choosing The Right Women’s Running Gear

The old saying, “you have to look good to play good” is definitely true when it comes to running. We are a pretty fashion conscious bunch at Bondi BUF and with our City2Surf training program in full swing, our daily conversations are peppered with topics such as ‘heel stride’, ‘hip alignment’, ‘core and glute activation’… but nothing gets us more excited (or flustered!) at the moment than what to wear on a run!

As with all fashionable fitness-wear, our running attire needs to be technical, moisture wicking, lightweight and easy to move in. But perhaps most importantly, it also needs to make us look good by emphasising the good bits (boobs and butt) and trimming the bad bits (thighs and tummy). Here’s our round up of the best running gear on the shelves at the moment.

Undergarments

While you might think no one can see them, and yes it’s highly unlikely anyone will be seeing them during your run (unless of course your tights are a little worse for wear), your undergarments are in fact pivotal to your success and ability to last the distance.  You want to keep your bust where it is and prevent the god-awful wedgie pick whilst running –  we’ve all done it and we’ve all seen it and it is impossible to look away.  So opt for a G-string, it is always the best option, plus a well-fitted, supportive bra (see last week’s article). Run free and easy with the Lululemon premium technithong, incorporating seamless technology and breathable fabric so you are set from the inside out.  Don’t forget socks, these play a critical role too.  There’s nothing worse than blisters on your feet or heels from socks that don’t last the distance and have you hobbling to the finish line after all that training.  Local gurus of all things running, The Running Company, recommend Icebreaker merino ultra light socks for their anti bacterial properties and ability to wick that sweat right away.

Keep Your Cool

Opt for quick dry fabrics that wick sweat away from the body and keep you cool, calm and collected.  We love the Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve top from Lululemon, with its lightweight and body skimming material, and not to mention those winter-essential thumbholes. The best invention ever! The Adidas by Stella McCartney Run Performance Loose Tank top not only looks seriously HOT but also uses Climalite fabric to sweep sweat away from skin and has a great waistband that will not ride up.  Remember when shopping for tops (and bras) to run on the spot, make sure the top doesn’t bother you, ride up or irritate you in any way.  If you decide to opt for a sleeveless top, consider its tightness under your arms to avoid the all-too-common chaffing when running. We are covering all bases here ladies! We want nothing standing in the way of first place!

The Little Black Dress for Runners

We now get to the pinnacle element of your running experience… the tights! Or if you dare this winter, the shorts. Think of this as the little black dress of your fitness wardrobe. There is such an abundance of choice out there now that it can be overwhelming when it comes to deciding what tights to purchase. Comfort, style, colour and material all play a part in the overall look and feel whilst running.  You want breathability and comfort to be paramount.  We love Skins  & 2XU’s range of tights and shorts, that use a compression fabric to allow you to workout longer, and also are scientifically proven to make the body perform better and recover quicker. Great if you are training for the City to Surf, or even an upcoming half marathon coming. More traditional brands like Nike have broadened their range to also include performance tights, perfect for running. We love the Nike Tech Running Tights.

Put your best foot forward with the shoes from last week’s blog and hit the pavement.  Not only will you look the part, you’ll feel comfortable, supported, motivated and prepared to do your best, whether it be on your ritual morning run or the fun-filled City2Surf. Run fast and train in style people!
